My trip to Vietnam ran from September 18th to October 16th. And, although I knew that I’d be cutting it close to experiencing raining season, my south-to-north itinerary allowed me to miss the rain at all the right times.

Vietnam is a huge country, so not all of its regions will experience the rainy season at the same time, or the same intensities.

Purchase Travel Insurance

It’s not the funest part about planning a trip to this Southeast Asian country, but I promise you- yes, you need it.

I know it’s tempting to think you’ll be fine and shouldn’t buy travel insurance to save yourself a few bucks. But, no one who has ever used travel insurance thought to themselves, “Wow, I couldn’t wait to use my travel insurance.” That’s because no one is looking to intentionally get hurt… until they do.

I know, for me, this was the most memorable part of my Vietnam trip, as I was completely taken aback by the kindness and welcoming nature the Vietnamese showed me as a foreigner backpacking their country.

Getting Around Vietnam

One of my main concerns as a solo female traveler is “How am I going to get around,” and “Will I be safe?” Thankfully, Vietnam was easy to navigate, whether it was figuring out how to get to the next city with a 13-hour overnight bus ride or on foot to find dinner in my new city.

Nestled along the stunning coastline of central Vietnam, Da Nang attracts travelers with its enticing blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and modern charm. From pristine beaches lapped by crystal-clear waters to towering mountains cloaked in lush greenery, this coastal gem offers a picturesque backdrop for unforgettable adventures.

But Da Nang is more than just a feast for the senses; it’s a vibrant city pulsating with life and energy. Explore ancient pagodas and historical sites that whisper tales of dynasties past, or wander through bustling markets brimming with local treasures and delectable street food delights.

Da Nang has been labeled the “Miami Beach” of Southeast Asia. I could quickly see why. As I walked on some of the softest white sand I’ve ever had in my life during sunset on my first day of arrival, I felt the warm water meet my toes and I turned around, looking at the glowing towers rising before me lining the skyline of this stunning city.

You’ll be overloaded by the possible dining options you can explore. While I favored the street food and markets, there are numerous restaurants to take advantage of as well.

You’ll also find pampering services of all kinds on every other street, from hair and nails, massages, you name it, you will probably be able to find a local selling it.

My personal experience:

From the moment I left the airport, I was welcomed with loud bustling streets filled with scooters that had way too many people and things than it was meant to hold (Image a family of 5 ride on a scooter meant for 2 or a man and a FRIDGERATOR being balanced on the same vehicle!).

As an American, this was completely shocking for me to initially experience, but it gradually became normal to me the more I continued to see this practice being done in every city I experienced in the country.

Although I didn’t get to experience much since it was a bit rainy, I could see that Da Nang is a beach lovers paradise for those lucky to arrive on a bright sunny day. I took advantage of Vietnam’s cheap prices to pamper myself with a full-service manicure, pedicure, massage, and haircut. I even bought a full wardrobe at its market to serve for the remainder of my Southeast Asia trip!

Arriving in Hoi An feels like stepping back in time. As soon as you walk through its narrow, lantern-lit streets, you’re surrounded by a mix of history and culture. You’ll see beautifully preserved old houses, temples, and bustling tailor shops where you can get custom-made clothes.

Every part of Hoi An has a story to tell, from the historic Japanese Covered Bridge to the lively central market filled with fresh produce and delicious local food.

At night, the town lights up with colorful lanterns that create a magical atmosphere along the river. Whether you’re exploring by bike, tasting street food, or taking a boat ride on the Thu Bon River, Hoi An offers a perfect blend of peace and excitement that will make you fall in love with it.

My personal experiences

Hoi An was a top city I was eager to experience, as it was hyped up by almost every traveler I had met who already had the pleasure of visiting this charming town- and it did not disappoint!

I was obsessed with the traditional lanterns I found adorned on every corner of every street. It was the perfect backdrop for me to cross off one of my bucket lists Disney moments during its Lantern Festival, where I got to release a candle from a small boat into the colorful river.

Visiting Hoi An without getting tailored clothes seemed like a sin, considering how infamous this area is for it. I had such a fun experience getting to come in for daily fittings and customize an outfit exactly to my liking! And, I have no doubt you will as well.

Ninh Bihn: Days 9-12 | Banana Tree Hostel

Arriving in Ninh Binh is like stepping into a postcard. As you explore this beautiful area, you’ll be amazed by its stunning landscapes and peaceful atmosphere. Picture towering limestone cliffs rising from vibrant green rice paddies, and winding rivers that take you through hidden caves and ancient temples.

You can hop on a boat for a scenic ride through the famous Trang An grottoes, or rent a bike to discover the charming countryside at your own pace. Don’t miss the ancient capital of Hoa Lu, where you can wander through historic ruins and learn about Vietnam’s fascinating past.

Whether you’re hiking up to the incredible views at Mua Cave or simply soaking in the natural beauty around you, Ninh Binh promises a tranquil escape that’s full of surprises and unforgettable moments.

My personal experience:

As lovely as Hoi An truly was, as someone who prefers nature over cities, it was a breath of fresh air arriving at Ninh Binh. I was in awe while admiring the towering cliffs and luscious greenery when riding around on a scooter I rented from my Hostel.

Another bucket list item was crossed off for me when I had the chance to bask in the sight of thousands of Lilly pads in full bloom at the bottom of Dragon Mountain. A backdrop I eagerly took advantage of to take some stunning photos during sunset!

Cat Ba: Days 12-16 | Secret Garden Hostel

Arriving in Cat Ba feels like discovering a hidden paradise. As you step onto this stunning island, you’re greeted by lush green hills and crystal-clear waters. Cat Ba is the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation. You can spend your days kayaking through the emerald waters of Lan Ha Bay, exploring secluded beaches, or hiking in Cat Ba National Park where you might spot some rare wildlife.

The island’s vibrant town offers plenty of spots to enjoy fresh seafood and soak in the local culture. Whether you’re scaling the cliffs for breathtaking views or unwinding on a quiet beach, Cat Ba offers an idyllic escape with plenty of natural beauty and excitement to make your trip unforgettable.

My personal experience:

Cat Ba was one of my top highlights during my Vietnam trip. From the moment my bus arrived on the island, I was in awe of its emerald water and protruding limestone cliffs. Staying at the Secret Garden Hostel made a world of a difference in my ability to enjoy the island, as it was only a 15-minute walk from the main strip, which had endless options for food, and the pier, where I was able to view a stunning sunset my first night here.

An additional 15-minute walk can take you to the secluded beaches that Cat Ba has to offer. I am so grateful I chose to visit Cat Ba over the more tourist and popular area of Ha Long Bay and recommend it to anyone else to do the same who may be thinking about it.

Sapa: Days 17-19 | Hoa’s Homestay

Arriving in Sa Pa feels like entering a whole new world. Nestled in the mountains of northern Vietnam, Sa Pa welcomes you with its cool, fresh air and breathtaking scenery. Picture terraced rice fields cascading down hillsides, mist-covered valleys, and colorful ethnic villages. You can trek through these stunning landscapes, visit local markets, and experience the unique cultures of the Hmong, Dao, and other ethnic groups.

The town itself is charming, with cozy cafes and bustling markets offering delicious food and handmade crafts. Whether you’re hiking up Fansipan, the highest peak in Indochina, or simply enjoying the serene views from a mountain lodge, Sa Pa offers an unforgettable blend of natural beauty and cultural richness that will captivate any traveler.

My personal experience:

Choosing a homestay allowed me to get so much closer to the locals in this area and paint a better picture of what the culture is like in this unique area of Vietnam. I was a bit disappointed to find out that the rice terraces had already been harvested before I arrived. So, I wasn’t greeted with the bright green fields I had seen all over social media.

However, I was still grateful for the chance to view the pockets of vibrant greens that had yet to be harvested along the dark green terraces, and for seeing the rice fields in general, as it was a major bucket list for me.

I do recommend that you do your research beforehand regarding when they may be harvesting to make your trip even more memorable when you arrive in Sa Pa!

Ha Giang: Days 20-23 | Mama’s Hostel

Arriving in Ha Giang feels like stepping into an untouched paradise. As you explore this remote region in northern Vietnam, you’ll be awed by its dramatic landscapes and unspoiled beauty. Imagine winding mountain roads, deep valleys, and towering limestone peaks.

The journey through the Ha Giang Loop is an adventure in itself, offering breathtaking views around every bend. You’ll encounter ethnic minority villages where traditions are alive and thriving, giving you a glimpse into a way of life that has remained unchanged for centuries. Whether you’re riding a motorbike through the stunning Ma Pi Leng Pass, visiting local markets, or simply soaking in the incredible scenery, Ha Giang offers an authentic and unforgettable experience that’s off the beaten path and full of wonder.

My personal experience:

The town of Ha Giang itself didn’t offer much besides a starting point for the infamous Ha Giang Loop Tour many tourists visiting the country are eager to experience.

However, once the tour begins, your eyes will be blessed with some of the most beautiful scenery this country has to offer.

My disappointment from missing out on Sa Pa’s unharvested fields quickly disappeared when I had the chance to see various bright green fields that had yet to be reaped.

It was the most thrilling experience during my trip, sitting on the back of a scooter being driven by a local who was winding us down endless turns this road has to offer.

Wander through the Old Quarter’s narrow alleys where you can find everything from handmade crafts to delicious local dishes.

Visit historical sites like Hoan Kiem Lake and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum to get a taste of Vietnam’s rich history. Whether you’re sipping coffee at a cozy café, shopping at a night market, or watching a traditional water puppet show, Hanoi offers a vibrant and dynamic experience that will captivate you at every turn.

My personal experience:

Harmonious chaos is how I would describe this city, and how I’ve heard many other travelers compare it to as well.

I felt overwhelmed exploring this city. There is just SO much going on. From the never-ending honking of scooters to navigating through endless crowds of people no matter the time of day, Hanoi seemed to always be pulsating with energy.

However, there are endless options of things to do here. I enjoyed visiting the birthplace of egg coffee at Cafe Giang during the day and exploring the bustling night markets later in the evening.

My top highlight in Hanoi had to be sipping on egg coffee while experiencing a train passing by me only inches from my face on the infamous train street! A must-do while in Hanoi!
